The Sculpts Museum Tile: H for Herbarium

  • £35.00
Tax included. Shipping calculated at checkout.

The Herbarium at Manchester Museum is a botanical storeroom, filled with around three-quarters of a million specimens. The collection has continued to grow since the mid-nineteenth century with important donations from people with a passion for the natural world, including Leopold Hartley Grindon, James Cosmo Melvill and Charles Bailey. This tile does not simply show the specimens dried, pressed, and mounted onto sheets of paper or stored in paper envelopes, it captures the strength and beauty of the living flora.

This extensive botanical collection brings together plants from all over the world, and the H tile also highlights some local specimens like the Altringham carrot and Timperley rhubarb. Today, the collection is used for art, science, and education to explore and interpret the world around us.

Each Tile is designed in Manchester by The Sculpts. The tiles are screen printed and hand-rolled in Stoke-on-Trent, before being fired in Manchester-local kilns.
