The Sculpts Museum Tile: E for the Elephant Maharajah

Maharajah is the elephant that walked from Edinburgh to Manchester. This tile beautifully illustrates some of the key elements in this now legendary Manchester story. In 1872, the owner of Belle Vue Zoo in Gorton bought him from a travelling circus in Edinburgh. Maharajah was supposed to travel to Manchester by train, but the story goes that after he destroyed the train compartment, it was clear that a different means of transport was required. Maharajah’s keeper, Lorenzo Lawrence, decided to walk from Edinburgh to Manchester instead. This famous journey took ten days and covered a distance of over 200 miles.

The M tile captures an extraordinary journey that brought Maharajah, an Asian elephant, via Edinburgh to Manchester, with the true spirit of Mancunian storytelling

Each Tile is designed in Manchester by The Sculpts. The tiles are screen printed and hand-rolled in Stoke-on-Trent, before being fired in Manchester-local kilns.
